We meet Kafka Hibino, a seemingly ordinary young man who dreams of joining the Defense Force and cleaning up kaiju alongside his childhood friend, Leno Ichikawa. However, Kafka's life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters a mysterious black cat-like creature during a cleaning mission.

The encounter leaves Kafka transformed. He soon discovers he possesses incredible superhuman strength and the ability to morph parts of his body into monstrous appendages. 

Overwhelmed and confused, Kafka seeks help from Defense Force officer Mina Shinomiya, who recognizes his predicament. She reveals a shocking truth: Kafka himself has become a kaiju, designated as Kaiju No. 8.

Faced with this life-altering revelation, Kafka is forced to confront his new reality. The episode ends with him joining a special unit within the Defense Force that specializes in housing and controlling kaiju enlisted to combat other kaiju threats.
